Underwater // In progress // 2016

In the progress of doing this topic, I struggled a lot. Most likely because I had too many ideas in my head. Ideas that were either uncompleted or too far from my ability. I messed up lots of sketches, I ruined more than five layout. In the end, I drew it straight on the canvas without sketching the final layout. Like I said, tonnes of problems. But I did it anyway.

I did most of the sketches using watercolour, some use colour pencils. The final painting was painted by acrylic paint.

I. Study sketches

What do I think about the ocean? Or under the sea you would said.

Sea animals, whales, sharks and dolphins. Different types of shells. Seaweed and coral everywhere. - A colourful world.

Then, I think about what is the world under the water/sea meant to me. I always believe that there are so many things in the world that our human will never find out. Tonnes of mystery we can't never solve, tonnes of questions we have that no one answer. Sea is a part of them. What are the others? I need something to represent my feeling about the sea, or somewhat similar. Thing that appear before human, thing that create by god, thing that our knowledge is not enough to know everything behind it. Then it came to me, an idea about another world that does not belong to human: The Universe.

II. Development

I have never been an expert in doing developmental sketches. But I did try. Put things together, combines different ideas, let the feeling flows and creates whatever it wants to create.

The bowl of water is pouring, create a pond with fish and seaweed.

Putting sea animals instead of hair on women, like...

Whale,...

Jellyfish or...

Shells.

In addition, a colourful Jellyfish. I really think this is my favourite one among all of them.

Holiday homework

Artist reference: Caroline S.Clark
Celebrate pride month.

I did this artwork during June, which mean the time when the world is celebrating LGBT pride month. As a huge supporter for LGBT community, and also to share my love with them after the terrible incident happenned in Orlando, I really want to represent it through my painting. I know that Caroline use acrylic paint, but I'm not confident in using those so I chose watercolour instead. I just use six main colour in this artwork, but with different tones, inspired by the LGBT's rainbow flag: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet.

Artist reference: David Chan
Horse as a model.

The idea of putting animals' head in human's body has been appeared in my mind for quiet a long time. But because of the fact that well, I can't draw animal so it has always been a thinking, not a thing I would consider doing in the near future. Then when I saw David Chan's artwork in the holiday assignment, I said why not. The whole artwork inspired by some fashion magazine I was reading at that time. At first I was planning to chose something that is sexier and wilder, like a bikini model, or Marilyn Monroe. But then I thought about horse, an animal that symbolise intelligent, patient and noble. I ended up choosing an elegant, simple and sophisticated look for my artwork in the new Mulberry's collection.

Chuck close copy drawing

First, I use HB pencil to do the outside part, just to give an overall look and mark out which point to shade or to leave it white. Then the rest just using a simple normal 2B pencil. The hardest part would be the hair, the body and the mouth. I think I could do it better if I had more patient (which obiviously I'm not. Apparently watching rock show and hot weather is the main reasons). Just to note, I do art the best when I'm watching something relaxing, like Friends, or at that time was Hotel Transylvania II.

Mid Year Exam

The topic I chose was Identity. All of this inspired by my country: Vietnam.

PIXLR

Since I was a little girl, the idea of protecting woman's right has always been inside my head. Woman appear in all of my artwork, including this one. A picture of woman being punch and hit, with blood to sympolise abuse, sexual or not. But behind that is a fade image of a tiger, represents strong and independence, never bow in front of anyone.

Portrait

Trying acrylic paint for the first time, experiment how to work with different tones of colours.
